FLINT, Michigan — Shirley Calderon retired from her job working in the kitchen at Kettering University last August and has been living without insurance, doing what she can to control her high blood pressure.
"I didn't run out of my pills til the first of January," Calderon, 62, of Flint said May 4 at the Cover the Uninsured Expo at the First Presbyterian Church in Flint. Calderon was among at least 125 who signed up for the Genesee Health Plan.
The Genesee Health Plan provides things such as doctor visits, X-rays, prescriptions and cancer screenings to about 27,000 low-income Genesee County adults who are uninsured .
Now, with coverage through the plan, Calderon is hoping to be able to go to the doctor and get new prescriptions to help control her high blood pressure.
"I need it," she said.
