FEMA: You may be eligible for flood assistance Providence Journal

WARWICK — The Federal Emergency Management Agency says many Rhode Islanders who were affected by the March storms and floods have not applied for benefits, even though they may be eligible.

“Disaster assistance is not charity,” the agency said in a news release. “This is federal taxpayer money set aside specifically for disaster assistance. The assistance one individual may receive will not take away from another applicant’s federal assistance funds.”

FEMA said also that those with insurance should register with the agency anyway, because insurance may not cover all losses.

FEMA has stationed personnel at home improvement outlets such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Sam's Club to advise property owners on mitigating flood damage and rebuilding after flooding, according to FEMA spokeswoman Mary-Margaret Walker.

Walker said FEMA workers have spoken with 2,715 people in Rhode Island about flood damage. She said that among those who suffered losses in the floods, more than 20 percent had not yet registered with FEMA. She said that nearly half thought they did not qualify, while others reported that they were unaware of the assistance available or had fixed the damage without help from FEMA.

Employment | Rhode Island’s NPR – WRNI

A friend of mine over at WEEI (who I will have more news on soon) alerted me to the job opportunity below.  Funny – I used to have a job title just like this one.

Program Director

WRNI/Rhode Island Public Radio seeks its first program director to build on the momentum from its successful independence campaign. The program director will be in charge of all marketing and promotion for the station on all media platforms to maximize audience and consider the conception and launch of new local programs.

Applicants must have years of experience data mining Arbitron ratings. Candidates should be tech savvy, with automation (Audio Vault), and sound editing and digital audio production (Fast Edit, Pro Tools) experience and have a strong familiarity with successful social media strategies. Superior written and oral communications skills are required, as are strong organizational and management skills.

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree, at least 3-5 years experience and demonstrated success as a manager or program director for a news station. Other preferred qualifications include 2-3 years of public radio experience that includes pledge drive production, on-air hosting/coaching, along with editorial decision-making experience. A public figure, the WRNI Program Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining communication with listeners through the station’s Advisory Council, Marketing Committee, public forums and events. This is a great opportunity to lead a close-knit and creative professional staff and help shape the sound of WRNI for years to come.

Salary commensurate with experience. This position includes a benefits package that includes health and dental insurance and a 401k plan.

Please send a cover letter and resume with “Program Director” in the subject line ONLY to npurcell [at] wrni [dot] org. No phone calls please.

Deadline for applications: June 25, 2009
