New parents, insurance companies tangle WOOD-TV
BORCULO, Mich. (WOOD) - For Mike and Renee Nykamp , the problem wasn't that they didn't have insurance. The problem was they had too much.
When their son Brayden was born six months ago, both his parents had health insurance. Renee had coverage through Cigna and Mike through Priority Health .
But the companies couldn't decide who would pay for what.
"It's $6,800 that they're fighting over," Renee Nykamp told Target 8 investigators. "It wasn't even fighting over paying. It was fighting over who pays first, which is so sad to me."
Brayden was born at Holland Hospital. Renee said they had been helpful and patient over the situation, but finally told the Nykamps their bill was being sent to a collection agency.
"That was a very, very, very scary thing to us," she said. "How to budget out a collection balance would have been horrible for us. We wouldn't have been able to make it."
Target 8 began asking questions of both insurance companies.
June 1, CIGNA began offering individual health insurance plans in Connecticut. Their portfolio of health plans for CT residents include open access managed care plans and high-deductible health plans that are HSA eligible.
