Health overhaul to be good for Utah's 'young immortals' Salt Lake Tribune

When University of Utah students Thomas and Keala Jarvis married eighteen months ago, what was "his" and "hers" became "theirs" -- everything, that is, except health insurance.

Marriage meant the couple were no longer able to stay on their respective parents' health plans. And purchasing coverage on the open market proved too expensive for both of them, so they opted to insure just Keala.

The decision has been a source of guilt and worry for Keala, who couldn't see a way around it, until now.

Starting in October, under the new federal health overhaul, dependent children can remain on Their parents' health insurance plans until age 26 even if they're married. But one of the state's largest insurers, BlueCross BlueShield of Utah, has decided to voluntarily abide by the new federal rules early, starting in June.

Others also vowing early implementation are United Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente and Humana. Intermountain Healthcare's SelectHealth is waiting until October.
