College insurance unaffected by bill The Dartmouth

In the face of national health care reform, many colleges nationwide will have to revise their school insurance plans, according Jack Turco, director of College Health Services. The Dartmouth Student Group Health Plan, however, will likely remain unaffected by the legislation because it meets the preliminary health care requirements announced for minimum coverage, Turco said.

“The DSGHP exceeds the standard guidelines issued by the American College Health Association for an appropriate, credible student health insurance/benefits program that is affordable,” DSGHP and patient accounting supervisor Ginger Farewell-Lawrence said in an e-mail to The Dartmouth.

Turco noted that the Dartmouth student plan’s quality of coverage is not necessarily the norm for college health insurance plans.

“There are many colleges that won’t be able to continue [their plans as they stand] because their plans are not good,” Turco said.

Just over 50 percent of Dartmouth undergraduates are covered under the student plan for the 2009-2010 school year, Farewell-Lawrence said. This figure is an increase from 20 percent of students covered, the rate which has been the norm in recent years, Turco said.

Health insurance temporary plans

Temporary health insurance is also known as short-term health insurance plans or short-term medical insurance. It is an insurance policy valid only for a limited period of time. Health insurance or indemnity is defined as a type of insurance plan whereby the insurer covers the medical expenses of the insured when one becomes sick due to covered causes, or due to accidents or other types of health related mishaps or incidents.

Temporary health insurance plans are a good option and provides ideal protection for those people who are in-between jobs, employed part-time, waiting for permanent health insurance to commence, attending school or recently graduated, and temporarily devoid of health insurance for any reason. They also tend to be low-cost health insurance plans, which are affordable, reliable and safe.

These temporary health insurance are intended for a short-term coverage and can be applied for any number of reasons, such as injuries to common health sickness. It gives the coverage for emergency treatment, medical fees, nursing home fees, ambulance charges, and intensive care treatment. Although they possibly will not cover the common health practices of the policy, they do cover a small area of the health savings. This coverage is not an endless one and this differs from one to another. It relies on the providers.

Temporary plans provide a person the freedom of selecting any doctor or hospital. They also have a deductible scheme for the individual as well as the family. A person under 65 years of age and children under 19 or 25 (if a full-time student) are eligible to apply for temporary health insurance. The insurer may be a government organization or a private agency. Normally, the temporary health insurance can be purchased for periods as short as 30 days or up to 360 days.

Developed to give you peace of mind and essentially safety and security in emergencencies, temporary health insurance plans are Short term plans which are not intended for daily health care; its policies are more of low-cost option to the full advantage plans, and were intended as sort of a Crutch in case of critical injury or unexpected sickness. Though a number of plans do supply coverage up to a full year, the majority simply proffer coverage between one to six months.
