Why employers should not pay for health care Denver Post
Fewer Colorado employers are providing health insurance to employees. While many are lamenting this fact, it is actually a step in the right direction.
I am increasingly disturbed by the health care debate because it has obscured the core issue - Why should employers provide health insurance? If people's only options for auto insurance were to choose among three plans their employer selected, they would revolt. So why do we think the same situation is okay when it comes to health insurance? The current system does not work for individuals, it does not promote health care cost containment and it places an undue burden on American business.
On any given day, 15-16 percent of Americans are uninsured, with over 30 percent of Americans going uninsured at some point in a two year period. The sheer number of uninsured people is evidence that the system does not work for the individual.
In addition, people may be prevented from pursuing careers as they choose employment to obtain health insurance. If individuals purchased health insurance directly, the U.S. would move closer to a market-based health care economy, which, in turn would start containing healthcare costs.
