I have ridden a motorcycle for nearly 40 years and have never had an accident or a claim as a result. This year, I have two vintage motorcycles, one with a sidecar, which are licensed and insured and which I use for recreation and short trips. I doubt I'll cover more than 2,000 kilometres this summer, yet my MPI premium for both is about $3,500 for the season.
Today, an inexperienced rider can take and pass the written test to get a beginner's motorcycle licence. MPI has advised me that if that person is not subject to the graduated licensing program and already has a driver's licence, then they can start driving on the street without any formal training immediately.
A modern 1,000cc motorcycle can easily exceed 250 km/h and accelerate to 100 km/h in under three seconds. And it can be purchased and legally driven on the road by a rider with no formal training. This is a recipe for one disaster after another.
