Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance's move to drive down the cost base is a sensible one, especially as customer power in the car insurance market has increased, with aggregators making trading conditions extremely competitive. The UK group will also have to tackle pricing and claims costs to return to profit, which together with the job cuts would position it well for a future sale.
Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance (RBSI) has announced plans to eliminate 2,000 roles across the division, including 500 that will be moved offshore, in a move being conducted against the backdrop of the Competition Commission last November ordering RBS to sell its insurance arm. This initiative has been partly prompted by the dissolution of the group's partnership with Tesco and the need to remain price-competitive. The lower expense base should produce stronger financial results in the future following RBSI's GBP50m loss in Q1 2010.
