The new Office for Budget Responsibility has, as was widely expected, produced a GDP growth forecast for 2011 that is significantly lower than the 3�3.5% put forward by Mr Darling in his March budget. A figure of 2.6% will be regarded as much more realistic in that it is close to the long-term running rate for the UK. It is consistent with the latest 3-monthly rolling forecast of 0.6% from the National Institute for Economic and Social Research and also with an update from the CBI forecasting 1.3% in 2010 and 2.5% in 2011. There has been a growing sense that the weakness of the EZ economy, the current strength of the pound vs. the euro and spending cuts will limit the rebound from 2009 and 2010.The OBR has also forecast lower deficits for the next five years despite the lower growth, which will be very helpful to the DMO�s funding operations over the next five years. The one shadow cast is by the OBR�s view that the UK economy does not have enough spare capacity to expand much faster than 2% per annum.
